Theory: Because lots of nerds *think* they like science fiction for the interesting technology and predictions, but *actually* they come back for great characters, you could get them to read any Jane Austen novel by starting with "On Mars..." then changing nothing.

My favorite science fiction characters are usually the AIs (drones, robots, Ship Minds in Banks' Culture novels), rather than humans. So, Regency-era 'Excession' wouldn't work for me....

Same here. When reading fantasy books I was more interested in the other species, like elves and dwarves, rather than humans. I’ve just begun writing a fantasy novel that doesn’t have any humans. I want to explore the idea of behaviours and culture that didn’t evolve from apes

Banks’ drones, robots & Ship Minds are smart, witty & often eccentric. Their perspective is closer to ‘the view from nowhere’ objectivity unclouded by any sort of mating game mind.

I’m rather fond of the secret, high-tech AI in Neal Stephenson’s Diamond Age. The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer entirely adapts and responds to her life situation to teach her relevant material needed for an interesting life. Such a good use of AI.

If the AIs are your favorite characters, you might enjoy playing seedship, the mobile game (it's quick).
