Can you explain why people hate @Quillette with such passion? I’m afraid I’m late to the party and don’t get all the phrenology references. I’ve read a couple pieces on there that I thought were fine, not outlandish or anything. Is this just a left-right thing?
It's mostly a left/right thing tbh. The phrenology refs are mostly people freaking out about the fact that brain size moderately predicts IQ, and some folks apparently can't stand the idea that human minds are instantiated in genetic and physical substrates.

Most of the brain controls bodily functions though, not higher reasoning. That's why a blue whale's brain is much bigger than yours--a bigger organism needs a bigger brain. Even within the human species, physical size predicts brain size better than intelligence does.

Uhh IQ is a meaningless metric, so it's about as good as phrenology
it is novel to me that anyone over the age of 5 would fail to understand why it is controversial to claim causal links between race or head shape and IQ in this day and age
Did they publish an article relating brain size to IQ or head shape to IQ? I mean, the whole thing is silly and pointless — but anyone making claims based on head shape is nuts. Even so, I’m having trouble seeing that as a cause for outrage. I guess we’ve all got our buttons.
