Can you explain why people hate @Quillette with such passion? I’m afraid I’m late to the party and don’t get all the phrenology references. I’ve read a couple pieces on there that I thought were fine, not outlandish or anything. Is this just a left-right thing?
It's mostly a left/right thing tbh. The phrenology refs are mostly people freaking out about the fact that brain size moderately predicts IQ, and some folks apparently can't stand the idea that human minds are instantiated in genetic and physical substrates.

The bad thing wasn’t getting hoaxed, it was the fact the editorial team actually inserted fabricated sentences in to make the piece further appeal to their market (myself included) and it’s prejudices. Damn.
I got hoaxed. Apologize and move on. A little wiser...
I’m pretty sure zero high impact factor physics or math journals have been hoaxed.
