Do you see any difference between a paper passing academic peer review and remaining on a journal's web site, versus being taken down after a few hours from an online magazine site?

Well sure. When academic journals accept submissions, they assume good faith on the part of submitters. That's how academia works. When political news sites receive purported inside info from a tipster, there's an extra duty of due diligence with respect to vetting identity.

Since people seem to be struggling with the above, assuming that a submission is made in good faith is not the same as just publishing anything. Papers go through peer review, but it is not a panacea and cannot catch fraud. See my piece in this collection:https://www.chronicle.com/article/What-the-Grievance/244753 …

Do you see any difference between the methodology used by Sokal squared this hoaxer? https://www.thedailybeast.com/quillette-duped-by-left-wing-hoaxer-posing-as-communist-construction-worker?ref=author … At least the "grievance studies" journals didn't add additional fraudulent claims to the hoax papers, unlike Quillette... https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/08/archie-carter-quillette-dsa …pic.twitter.com/X3LjZ0rn5d

The former being exposed as a "journal" that does not really have credibility, the latter being exposed as just being another cheap online magazine even if it has been presenting itself as committed to "high-quality journalism"?

Sokal’s paper wasn’t peer reviewed and that Lehmann suggests that it was is another nail.

if the article did not hold to scrutiny after a few days & another magazine cans figure this out in a short time that there is a lack of due diligence. Quillete has to hold it self to a high standard if it is going to critique the peer review system. Ps I respect skocal squared.
