My heuristic is, folks shouldn't ask the government to ban something if they can't clearly define what the thing is.

Any firearm that is not a bolt or level-action rifle, shotgun, or revolver. Do voluntary buy back for all other types funded on gun/ammo company taxes pegged to annual gun violence rates. Require CBC+psych evaluation+safety course for all sales/transfers w/ biannual renewal.
I'm a psych professor, and I wouldn't trust the government to make psych evaluations about who's allowed to exercise their constitutional rights.

I'm fine w/ the evaluation protocols that the govt already has for fitness to stand criminal trial, serve in the military, work w/ children, & fly airplanes, are you? Purchasing & owning equipment designed specifically for the efficient killing of humans should be no different.

It’s possible to be changed, sure. Realistically speaking it isn’t going to happen, it isn’t politically viable here, and the suggestion is a non starter.
