The process of “figuring out what consumers want, and giving it to them” is often called “Product Development”, or just “Product”, in Tech companies. At least in the Tech companies I've been a part of, the ‘Marketing’ people are focused mainly on advertising.

Yes, but I think there's a crisper distinction between Product and Marketing in tech since the product development is so ... technical. In fast-moving consumer goods and other industries, the market research is folded much more tightly into product development.
