I disagree, in that my freedom of study and expression has been greatly aided by tenure. I see similar gains in my colleagues.

You are completely missing the point here. The tenure debate is whether it is, as a whole, a net benefit to the society - not about some anecdotes (whether true or not). And as it stands today, unis are parasitic entities, with tenure being a major contributor to parasitism.
