I think the best funding model would be self-funding through monetizing the innovative new knowledge generated by research. However, few academics know how to make money. We need a new Edison or two to take the lead.

I didn't appreciate that they completely left psychology and sociology out of the scientific fields they drilled into. Choosing the fields they did provides for an easy perception of ideological skew in knowledge vs trust in science.
