Virtue signalling is called like that because it's most often just that, signalling without anting up.

Good take. It’s a form of ritualized tribalism: we believe in the same gods, say the same combination of words, etc. You trade depth for solidarity. The dark ages were all about this. Reason, individuality and related projects are in tension with this.
