I’m reasonably socially conservative because I believe that’s the best position to maximize human flourishing. If I come to believe that that calculation is wrong, then I will change my position.

While young & old can and do abuse alcohol, and much harm occurs every year, we've run the alcohol experiment longer and the data show that we can continue to run a global civilization while partaking, whereas I'm worried that cannabis and other drugs may be a bridge too far.
We ran the alcohol experiment from the Dark Ages through the Middle Ages. Not a whole lot of civilizational progress until coffee & tea were introduced and counter-acted the stupefying effects of alcohol, and sparked the Enlightenment. IMHO.

I'll definitely give you coffee and tea as major stimulants to the relaunch of Western hegemony, but I have not seen the data blaming alcohol for the stupor of mediavelism (the Moors seemed to do mediavelism just fine sober).

We did ? Not sure roaming vikings, huns and barbary pirates were good for wine or plum growth (potatoes came later from America). Still better than nothing (no antibiotics).
