I’m reasonably socially conservative because I believe that’s the best position to maximize human flourishing. If I come to believe that that calculation is wrong, then I will change my position.

FWIW, I'm with you Bo on polyamory and drugs, including even cannabis, which I believe can do great damage, especially to the young, if it replaces goal-directed activity.

While young & old can and do abuse alcohol, and much harm occurs every year, we've run the alcohol experiment longer and the data show that we can continue to run a global civilization while partaking, whereas I'm worried that cannabis and other drugs may be a bridge too far.

We ran the alcohol experiment from the Dark Ages through the Middle Ages. Not a whole lot of civilizational progress until coffee & tea were introduced and counter-acted the stupefying effects of alcohol, and sparked the Enlightenment. IMHO.
