If someone says 'you're virtue-signaling', do you take that as:

PS saying 'it's not _really_ virtue if it's signaled' is like saying 'it's not really athleticism if you win races' or 'it's not really intelligence if you score high on IQ tests'...

The term--that I believed you coined--is great, but like many great terms, has become co-opted for tribal ends and far too over and incorrectly used. Glad to see you making an attempt to correct its understanding in public, despite an understandable pride in its use & politics.

I've been talking about 'signaling of moral virtues' since 1996, but I honestly didn't coin the term 'virtue signaling', which I think comes from the LessWrong blog c. 2013, inspired by Robin Hanson, who in turn may or may not have been inspired by me....

Signaling, I think, means trying to draw attention to your virtues rather than just acting on them. Hard to think of it as anything but self-serving. Social condemnation for bad behaviors is important, but when it's done in reference to one's own qualities, it seems shallow.
-
How would evolution favor any behavior that isn't 'self-serving' at some level?

Geoff, I don't get it. If you're truly virtuous then of course you wouldn't try to signal it at all. Virtue signalling is an oxymoron. People get is intuitively, that's why it's so off putting.

If there is such a thing as “good” virtue signaling, that implies that there are times when one’s motivation for behaving ethically should (at least sometimes) be to let others know one is virtuous. Really? Should that be the motivation for being ethical?
