PS my personal take is that virtue signaling should be a mixed/neutral term overall, but that as a behavior, it can be done badly, unselfconsciously, and/or delusionally, or done well, with self-awareness & humility. For more on that, see my new ebook:http://gum.co/nhFKP

PS saying 'it's not _really_ virtue if it's signaled' is like saying 'it's not really athleticism if you win races' or 'it's not really intelligence if you score high on IQ tests'...

I did write a longer piece on this, but in summary, "virtue signalling" is a form of fake social signalling created to get in-group status for not actually doing anything that requires effort.http://blacklabellogic.com/2017/02/13/the-virtue-signalling-of-social-justice/ …

Neutral. Like if someone tells me I'm looking or hearing. It's baked into the DNA. Can't avoid it.

I’m not an ideologue, and don’t have an intellectual tribe to signal to.

Isn’t *that* signaling?

It means you are saying “right-on” things while not actually doing anything about it, so it is bad.

Usually when i hear that, i assume the person meant "cheap virtue signaling" virtue signaling by itself is not a problem, cheap one is to be avoided.
