It wasn't as big as a dinosaur killer. It was a city killer. It would do a lot of damage but not enough to endanger all life on Earth. Its relatively small size, plus its speed and elliptical orbit kept it from being seen until it was almost here.

It's was roughly twice as far as geostationay orbit. In the scale of not just the universe or the galaxy or heck even our solar system... that was insanely closer than a bullet brushing your arm hair. We're incredibly lucky.
