Or they know a moral panic when they see one. Climate change isn't an existential risk. If you really want to solve it, you support nuclear power and geoengineering. Not putting the brakes on economic growth.

I support both of those things. But nuclear requires subsidies from the Big Bad Government to be viable. Climate change doesn't have to be an 'existential' risk for us to be incredibly concerned about it. The destruction of coastal cities will wipe out plenty of economic growth.
