My new video about the Fermi Paradox: do most alien species go extinct because they get caught up in runaway consumerism, virtual reality, and fake forms of biological fitness? Do alien video games make them forget to have kids?https://youtu.be/T1NKM3MXSm0

NO. It only takes *one* expansionary species. Species's psychologies will not be so uniform that any anthropomorphic social problem could get them *all*. The giant bugs with a hive queen didn't get caught up in virtual reality, so where are *they*?

Maybe it's my failure of imagination, but I doubt the giant bugs could invent interstellar travel without inventing fitness-faking technologies first.

The point is to be more precise about what fraction of the filter one purports to explain with anyone one obstacle. Just how many factors of 10 of the the ~24 min total factors does @primalpoly propose to explain this way?

Why couldn't it explain ~100% based on a weak technology determinisn (ref Bostrom sandox) ? For all civilisation: math >>computers>> porn & other emulation of fitness cues ?

Eliezer is of course correct. In fact even within one species it’s enough for one group to be expansionary for that species to be expansionary, even if the other 99.99% members of the species are just content with video games, VR etc.

One of you is talking about the species to be found on a planet, the other about the one doing the expansion itself
