Perhaps the alien super-parents are out there, but as sensible folks, they anticipate the demoralizing effects of making their presence known - why would humans strive if everything they could achieve already existed? So their apparent absence is a curtain, intentionally drawn.
Maybe. But some folks might be more inspired by knowing cosmic success is possible, and demoralized by the vast silence...

Indigenous Americans were doing pretty well in the vast silence, and nearly destroyed by exposure to a culture only a millisecond more advanced than theirs, cosmically speaking. The cosmic super-parents probably have a trillion such horror stories to draw upon.
