Not sure this is the best symbology... Peacock feathers are an example of “honest signals” - they signal health & good genes *and* are very hard to fake (makes you a better target for predators so you better have those good genes!) Can we say the same about “virtue signalling”?
In the preface I'll explain that some virtue signals are 'cheap talk' and unreliable, but others are extremely reliable and hard to fake (e.g. working for Medicine sans Frontiers for years in a poor country).

My understanding of the term (as originally coined, at least) is a necessary component of "virtue signalling" is the absence of any sort of sacrifice and/or undertaking of any sort of action. Working for a charity, even only a domestic one is most certainly not virtue signalling
