@EPoe187 Geoffrey, Bo, you're always sniping at academia. Join those of us outside it who still feel able to think for ourselves. And enjoy the challenge of creating measurable value at the same time. I don't mean journalism BTW.

Sadly true. My flat earth theories are shamed at physics conferences, but are very popular when I shout them from a megaphone at the county fair.

Has anyone ever been forced to go to an academic conference? Many non-believers, including me, are still forced to go to church when home visiting family. Here is a list of topics I can't discuss with family/neighbors: abortion, welfare, war, Obama being born in America, guns etc

When was Academia ever "dedicated to critical thinking and controversial ideas?" Until the 1870s Oxbridge undergrads had to be bonifide members of the church of England.

All institution tilt to tyranny over time.... especially liberal ones. Historical tyrannical reigns start with agents of chaos. French, Russia, German The right is a slow walk towards tyranny but is usually usurped by agents of chaos.

Reeeeally depends on what the ideas are. Talking theology at a church social is a passive aggressive minefield
