I think something should only be called virtue signaling if the primary purpose is to make oneself look good. I recycle because I genuinely thought it was better for the environment and never looked too deep into it.
Not looking too deeply into the effectiveness of the ritual is a hallmark of virtue-signaling.

Fair, but my point is just that if I wasn’t doing it to make myself look good, is it really virtue signaling? In effect, perhaps, but seems usually V S is about intent.

Also, we have to rely on the face value claims of perceived experts some of the time... not practical to thoroughly run down every claim, and maybe not beneficial to only follow through on things you have run down. Difficult balance to strike.
