Why do so few professors take advantage of tenure to pursue controversial research? W/ a few big exceptions most scholars come up with their major ideas—and are most radical—in their 20s-30s. Tenure happens ~40 if you're lucky. Not many ppl going to start something from scratch.

It's a reward for people who proved they are conformists...so they will have the freedom to challenge the status quo.

I'm wondering if there is some studies about this : in the history of science, aren't the most radical / transformative ideas born OUTSIDE the institution of academia ?
