The state of Missouri has made it illegal for plant-based products to use the word "burger." The punishment extends up to jail time. In a world where people truly cared about free speech, this kind of thing would get much more attention.https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/7/3/20680731/mississippi-veggie-burgers-illegal-meatless-meat …

People saying 'if you don't know what a veggie burger is, you deserve whatever you get'. Well, bear in mind there are recent immigrants & students in the US who aren't native English speakers, and products should try to be intelligible to them.

1: True, 2: That is not the reason why veggie burgers can't be called veggie burgers.

"veggie burgers" are a pretty commonplace casual restaurant item. They're on the Amtrak menu. And are they going to take
@BurgerKing to court https://www.bk.com/menu-item/veggie-burger …? -
If people get confused by "veggie burger", we don't need to count them when figuring out if some other formulation is confusing.

I very nearly bought vegan jerky at the airport because I was jet-lagged and the brand was “primal”...just noticed at the last minute. The marketing was orange and red like regular jerky, not green as are most vegan protein products. Vegan was in relatively small letters.

That’s the only vegan product I might have ever confused for the real thing.

If people don’t understand what “veggie burgers” are, we probably don’t need to count them on the census either...

Surely natural selection comes into play here (too dumb to know what a veggie burger is, so you live with the outcomes of that), and, given the greater health benefits, I think a few folks would benefit from accidentally dropping their red meat intake.
-
Dropping red meat intake for fake foods filled with soya and pea protein isolate sounds like a great idea.
