If you think you're allowed to question the Sacred Narrative in your culture, you haven't discovered the real Sacred Narrative yet.https://twitter.com/EPoe187/status/1146790747288547328 …

    Geoffrey Miller added,

    Bo Winegard @EPoe187
If you want to understand the the extent of free speech, then ask yourself what your culture’s most sacred narrative is. Then ask yourself: am I allowed to criticize it? Stalin was happy about criticisms of capitalism, after all. It’s worth deeply contemplating this.

An interesting one in my field currently is the causal narrative around past psychological traumas

Is there anything sacred to all cultures or nearly all cultures?

As a new employee in the office, I was once warned not to criticize Tim Horton's coffee - a sacred beverage in Canada. I mentioned it was tasteless crap one day and several people got genuinely upset. I decided then never to talk about health care.

The word “allowed” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. You’re not allowed to yell Fire! In crowded theater. Is combustion our “Sacred Narrative”?

Ok, I give. What’s a SACRED narrative? Examples please, not definition.

When I moved to North America from USSR, I discovered that mentioning any research on race can “unperson” one in no time. It was not a problem over there, but criticizing Communist Party Leaders anf thr regime could get you in a mental hospital or jail. To each its own sacred cow

Well, in the West the obvious one is gender politics and especially feminism. Try critiquing that and staying in the good graces of polite company...
