As a product of the best American public universities, the number of undergraduate students who end up working on cutting edge research products is quite high. While their fees don't directly pay for the research, they subsidize it and they benefit quite a bit from it.
TBF I don't see the logic of tuition fees subsidizing research. If society benefits from research, then taxes should fund research -- not the students who happen to attend a particular school.
