For me, it's simply a fun outlet. If you're very verbal and are prone to quip, it's a bit like intellectual masturbation...it just feels good to compose and distribute a decent piece of wordcraft, whether anybody pays attention to it or not.

That plus a risk of severe public humiliation and shame from an on-line outrage mob--which gives it some excitement.

If you're relatively introverted and a genuine smart-ass, something like Twitter is a godsend...friends and family alone simply can't handle the volume of smart-assery such a person can generate and I'm sure keeping it in does bad things to your internal organs over time.
