Have you read the book? Have they? None of this reflects what was in the book for me, which was an argument for acting out of rational compassion for people as they are rather than parochial loyalty to an imagined person.

A) I kind of want to read the book but it's going to make me really mad because it's going to use "empathy" to mean "sympathy". B) Ultimately one needs emotional motivations for compassionate behavior; see Amartya Sen on sympathy vs. commitment.
