I don’t get the vehemence of the criticism of Gould. He got some stuff wrong. So what? All scientists get stuff wrong; it’s part of the job. Plus, he did a huge amount of good for science as a popularizer of biology and palaeontology. He left an enviable balance sheet, IMO.
Gould made it significantly harder for a generation of evolutionary psychologists to get jobs, which had real effects of lives, careers, and families. He was a bad actor.
I doubt that. The blank slate is so widely accepted in the academy that I suspect evolutionary psychologists (and evolutionary anthropologists) would’ve had a hard time even if Gould had agreed with Wilson.
