While Stephen J. Gould certainly deserves harsh criticism, many of his earlier collections of natural history essays such as "Ever Since Darwin," "The Panda's Thumb," and "Hen's Teeth and Horse's Toes" are some of the best there are. They are science writing at its best.

I doubt that. The blank slate is so widely accepted in the academy that I suspect evolutionary psychologists (and evolutionary anthropologists) would’ve had a hard time even if Gould had agreed with Wilson.
