Over the last 30,000 years of domestication from the grey wolf, dogs have evolved two whole new eye muscles -- the retractor anguli oculi lateralis (RAOL) & levator anguli oculi medialis (RAOM) -- to evoke sympathy & food from humans. Evolution can work pretty fast.https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1140795308483514368 …

It’s the first biological evidence scientists have found that domesticated dogs might have evolved a specialized ability used expressly to communicate better with humans. @haleysweiss reports: http://on.theatln.tc/Rj28O3h

Did we not select for the same things in domesticated cats? Because I feel nothing in my soul when I look into a kitty’s eyes.

Humans and dogs have had a dynamic working relationship for eons. Humans and cats? 1. People start farming and store their grain. 2. Rodents arrive to feast on abundant food. 3. Fuzzy cats arrive to feast on abundant rodents. 4. We let them hang around. 5. They’re still here.pic.twitter.com/uvMbOT2JHQ

That's selective breeding by humans though isn't it? We know that works fast. Different from just evolution.

As Darwin argued, there's a lot of overlap between natural selection, sexual selection, and artificial selection. All can work very fast.

In a rare example of inter-species bonding, when dogs make eye contact with their owners, each mammal releases oxytocin or vasopressin, which (among other things) generate paternal/maternal feelings. Cited from book “Behave”. Incredible stuff

So this series of mutations would of happened prior to our knowledge, then once it became visible we selectively breaded ones with the most dominant trait? Would it of started with one individual as mutations are exceptionally rare?
