The political Right is the party of censorship almost by definition: it's the intrusive Church & the authoritarian State. It's the ancien régime. I rail against the Left over this issue, because it's the side we *should* be able to rely on to support free inquiry and discussion.https://twitter.com/IonaItalia/status/1140329965822578689 …

I've been paying lots of attention to that. But my experience of what you refer to is different: first, it didn't get very far before the mid-1980s, as many liberal-minded people were not interested. Second, it receded from, say, 1996 to 2011. Third, it skyrocketed after that.

In continental europe (france, italy especially) the left has always been authoritarian

It disturbs me when people point to either the right or left as the “censors”... elements of both parties are super authoritative and should be drubbed out by all people who really care about that stuff. Pointing fingers=100% virtue signal

That is just not correct. Overwhelmingly, censorship in the West has, historically, come from social and religious conservatives - this dates back to about the 4th century AD. For censorship of modern literature, read this authoritative book for example: https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Lean-Back-Everywhere-Obscenity/dp/0679743413/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1EHRD4GN08O9E&keywords=girls+lean+back+everywhere&qid=1560741767&s=gateway&sprefix=girls+lean+%2Caps%2C381&sr=8-1 …

Likely depends on the circles you run in... PBS didn't show a special on a gay civil rights movement due to local hawks
