Gay was monstrously contemptible but walking off would have signalled to Gay's questioner a message that both she & Gay & SPLC were right. No-one else would have gleaned anything. CHS made the right response and rightly won the room.
She got polite applause, but I don't think CHS won the room. That room was unwinnable.

That doesnt make the conversation worthless. CHS did exactly what people should do in that environment, something I fail at mightily. Maintained composure largely and stuck with her studied views. I disagree with her from a 10,000ft perspective but she did well there
