I'm sure she way overstates her case in that book. But... I think part of it is an argument is worth making. The beauty ideal in the 80s was bordering unhealthily thin, and was pushed by the fashion industry and other commercial interests.

Do you mean the 90s? The 80s were about the amazon, broad-shouldered look. The 90s were about the 'waif' look, epitomized by Kate Moss (who was never anorexic, despite the press constantly insinuating she was)
