Arguably the "conservative" values of today are far closer to the "liberal" values of a century or two ago. There seems to have been an overall liberal drift while variance remains. See also the World Values Survey.
Mainstream 'Conservatives' of today are right wing liberals or 'classic' liberals. People sometimes say putting the qualifier 'democratic' in front of socialism does not change the socialsim bit... Well, the same is true for classic liberals, they are liberals fundamentally.

Terms need to be explicitly defined when polling. If they asked me if I was "liberal" on some scale, I'd answer that I'm extremely liberal---in that I hold the freedom of the individual to be of central importance. If they meant to conflate it with something else...
It's the old joke my Dad used to tell: 'if you're not a socialist at 20 you haven't got a heart. If you're not a capitalist by the time you're 40, you haven't got a brain.' He grew up seriously poor, like so many in the 40s and 50s. And idealistic too. But he worked hard etc.
If you define 'conservative' as the status quo, then young people, who have less power, have been and will always be anti-conservative. The more salient issues are related to regulation, markets, immigration, identity politics, guns, drugs, policing, and there it's not so clear.
Exactly: once they get married, get mortgage and a job they all become conservatives.
