Most PhD programs teach students nothing about how to get book deals, do podcasts, give interviews, run a YouTube channel, use social media, or engage with the public in any way. As if getting cited by a hundred colleagues is worth more than reaching a million fellow citizens.

As an institution, the university bears some responsibility to communicate interesting science to the public It makes no sense to expect each individual researcher to have this as a goal. Their efforts should be directed towards good research and effective pedagogy

There is a huge array of things paid for by taxpayers who appoint representatives and auditors to monitor as we cant be informed of detailed work by every person employed or subsidised. The skills describe should be promoted better to serve taxpayers, not necessarily teach them.
