But this is not an isolated incident for Peterson. In 2017, he announced plans to create a searchable database of university courses from across North America and Europe. The database would measure how much "neo-Marxist" content each course contained.https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-friday-edition-1.4396970/u-of-t-profs-alarmed-by-jordan-peterson-s-plan-to-target-classes-he-calls-indoctrination-cults-1.4396974 …

The ultimate goal, Peterson explained, was to drive enrolment in these classes down so low that whole departments would have to close. Which kinds of departments was he targeting? Come on, you know the answer to that already.pic.twitter.com/5QQfl2S4We

Peterson later put his plan on pause, but only because he worried it might contribute to political polarization. That's not very reassuring. It was particularly cold comfort for faculty at UofT, many of who I know personally and who remain deeply alarmed.https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-monday-edition-1.4396981/toronto-university-professor-says-controversial-website-on-hiatus-1.4396986 …

(By the way, if you're tempted to write off Peterson's list as harmless or even salutary, ask yourself how you'd feel about a person making a searchable database of every prof or PhD student who's contributed to Quillette. Still think it's harmless?) So that's Strike 1.

Strike 2: The Lawsuits. Peterson has launched not one, but TWO defamation lawsuits against Wilfrid Laurier University and members of its faculty. Note: The first suit is over private, opinion-based speech. The second was public, but also opinion-based.https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/pa8dyy/free-speech-hero-jordan-peterson-launches-another-defamation-lawsuit …

And as Conor himself explains below, these lawsuits were explicitly launched in order to teach Wilfrid Laurier a lesson and to discourage other faculty members from engaging in speech he considers offensive. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/06/the-jordan-peterson-tour-comes-to-aspen/563813/ …pic.twitter.com/vIQMXTaEVi

He also threatened to sue
@kate_manne,@seanilling, Vox, and Cornell. On what grounds? That Manne had defamed him by making the following statements. You tell me if this is a person who genuinely believes in free speech. https://www.thecut.com/2018/09/jordan-peterson-threatened-to-sue-feminist-critic-kate-manne.html …pic.twitter.com/Pzu3GYyLAd

Strike 1: The List Strike 2: The Lawsuits Strike 3: His meeting with Orban Of course, this isn't baseball. Three strikes doesn't mean you're out, and everyone has their own threshold. But if, by this point, your credulity is not under serious strain, I question your sincerity.

And again, it is precisely those people most deeply invested in a good faith defense of campus free speech who should have the lowest threshold of all. Otherwise you will forgive us if we wonder whether your own critique is on the level.

In the US, public universities must obey constitutional law regarding #1A free speech. Supporting that idea does not impose any special obligation to denounce others who claim to do so if we don't agree with them about something.

Replying to @primalpoly @JeffreyASachs
Excuse me this is the He-man Woman Haters Club. There is no ideological inconsistency with claiming our free speech rights while promoting those who want to squash the speech of those we hate. We put our name right on our clubhouse!pic.twitter.com/fPnux1zTNu
