No, I think chickens are a bit less sentient, but their lives in factory farms are much much worse than an average dog's life.

Also at least conceivable that the dog's extra sentience (wrt chickens) in this instance would have mainly been involved in experiencing endless grief of bereavement.

Sentience is how I choose to judge the rights & wrongs of this. That is why eating Pigs has always bothered me. & much more than that , the way they are kept & killed. My views are evolving

Selective reasoning. There lives are not worse than the average dog in many parts of Asia. And if dogs are more sentient than chickens then this suffering trumps what chickens go through.
