It is perfectly reasonable to suggest people who find life generally miserable shouldn't have children. I would encourage them to refrain from passing on their misery. The problem is when they prescribe the 'solution' for people who generally find life a joy. How stupid is that?

Joy in life is largely heritable. Also, his reasoning regarding the relative weighting of joy and suffering is faulty. Those who regard life as generally a joy see having missed out on life (not having died) and what they see as its natural state of joy to be a terrible loss.
