As a matter of personal taste, I agree that their proposal looks ugly and would rather they just restore it to original specifications, however, isn’t it being a bit melodramatic to interpret this as a rejection of Western Civ? Hypochondria of perceived virtue signaling, perhaps?

At what point should a civilization declare a structure static? Most centuries+ old buildings of historic significance have experienced rebuilding from disaster/damage and/or remodeling consistent w/ evolving aesthetic norms & technologic advances? Perhaps you are too nostalgic?
