I know what they said. Now I want to know why they're really doing it.

It would be ironic if providing 'adversity scores' actually improved SAT predictive validity by allowing colleges to make corrections for differential regression to the mean (a 1600 from a high-AS student will regress further back to the high-AS low group mean than low-AS score).

Unfortunately I suspect most admission officers have never heard of Kelley's paradox and, like most people, actually think one should correct scores in the opposite direction to be more accurate.

What is the purpose of an adversity score? Has it been correlated in a meaningful way with college success, career outcomes, etc? Why is it a useful metric?

More then likely an end run around any racial preferences being found to be discriminatory. The elite institutions like the current system of being very discriminatory towards Asians, but can’t really explain why it’s it not discriminatory, or how Asians have white privilege.
