writing reviews as a grad student was one of the more educational experiences I recall - an opportunity given to me by a Prof - for which I am grateful
Profs demanding that grad students write their journal paper reviews for them (for no compensation or recognition) is utterly unethical & shameful. This exploitation needs to stop. The great thing about being a researcher of the fringe is that any prof willing to have approached me to do this would be clear trigger that their immediate referal to occupational health services.

Medical research is more corrupt than that. Schools must graduate fellows, fellow must first author a paper, but the post-doc researcher already did the research and wrote the paper so the fellow gets first authorship so that the department gets to graduate that fellow.
