I love all of the Culture series though the premise that a sizable amount of Minds would care enough to babysit billions of biologicals still seems flimsy to me.

I like to consider the existential risk question in the opposite spirit: "What's the best thing that could happen?" -> "What is the best possible configuration that a universe can have, and how can it be the one I inhabit?"
