I've never seen it as a choice. Don't you just find yourself compelled to be with whoever you're in love with/obsessed with/addicted to? or is that where I've been going wrong?

I don't know. But if you decline (or even choose to not pursue) the object of your obsession and instead make a rational choice of mate after sobre consideration of compatibility, how do you avoid despising them? This is treating others as a means to your end = mating success
