The muzzle energy of the weapons they are using in last night's ep are literally 2 orders of magnitude lower than large naval muzzle loaders from the age of sail. The ballistae vs ships scene was GoT jumping the shark, those bolts stick in the side of a hull, they don't smash it.

Yeah, I went to bed thinking about them, and they got more absurd the more I thought about it. I can see them being a threat to the dragons, _close_ and with the right, very sharp head, but as ship smashers, and AAA to many hundreds of meters? Yuck.
