A good shortcut to empathy is to remember that every single person is exactly what you would be if you were them.
I've thought about that a lot, given my behavior genetics perspective (we're all just genes + experiences + random factors). I find it a more imaginatively compelling basis for compassion than the Golden Rule.

On the other hand, chaos theory suggests probabilistic effects at the quantum level could effect sensitive initial conditions leading to a different life outcome. In other words, I need to get off Twitter b/c I have a million chores to do around the house!

I read this in a childrens book many years ago. ”If I were you I would do...” ”No mom, I you were me, you would do exactly as I do” There was an insight that lingered.

Except that the Golden Rule (& other such statements of justice as reciprocity) does not rely on the falsehood that “I” could ever become “you” or vice versa.
