Only one mainish character died though. Nobody cares what Hot Pie's last words are (Hot pie doesn't die but you get the point without spoilers)

house mormont strongly disagrees. Aside from Ayra, Mormont was most badass dude in whole episode. Lead charge into the wights.

Oh I think Theon absolutely got closure. Bran showed his first sign of humanity in three years to give it to him: "You're a good man, Theon. Thank you."
-
The closure of his redemption arc was touching. "You're a good man" is about the most gratifying thing one could say to Theon as he prepares to run toward certain death, since he spent so much time (and got flak for) being a cowardly, traumatized weasel kowtowing to stronger men.

In the director's cut, Jorah whispers, "How 'bout a quick handy before I go? I promise I won't tell your nephew."

How about the "horrific realism" of smart, ruthless nobles fighting for their lives who don't bother putting together a battle plan or any strategy to leverage two dragons and the best cavalry in the world?
-
Don't get me started on the fire support strategy! Or the idea that fighting massed infantry out in the open when you doubtless have terrain features to use is even a quarter smart.

And yet, when compared with the impact of events like "the Red wedding" earlier in the series, it's clear that the writing has started to largely adhere to TV tropes and clichés. This was the ultimate confrontation of the entire series, and who died? C and D-listers.
