It's clear that those trenches were meant to be a last ditch effort to help cover the retreat if need be.

Jon had seen a battle with them before, and as I recall, their own troops rising to become the enemy... why not have all his own troops stab themselves with a sliver of dragon glass prophylactically? Then they'll die again if reanimated. So many things wrong with this ep.
