Actual psychology: personality comes mostly from genes plus noise. Psych-adjacent fields (life coaching, self-help, New Age therapies): personality comes from unresolved childhood trauma & maladaptive parenting. The persistence of Freudianism never ceases to astound me.

That’s really interesting, the peer group argument was one of the most compelling arguments I read in The Blank Slate. Do you think there are other claims in that book that need updating?
