There's not actually very compelling evidence that peer groups shape personality -- although it was a reasonable hypothesis 20 years ago.

The Kaiser study of ACEs shows a pretty strong dose-response relationship of Adverse Childhood Experiences with later life negative health outcomes. Some of it is genes, but it's pretty f'n crazy to assume the events have no impact. Oh well, not easy to think both/and I guess.
