That seems like a variation of the fallacy of relative privation.
Maybe. I'm just pointing out that people have radically inconsistent attitudes towards animal welfare issues, and are not scope-sensitive to the relative scales of their issues. In other words, maybe it's not a fallacy if you take relative scale of suffering into account.

It's worth thinking about. Personally, I can't reconcile why I'm okay with factory farming but not animal abuse. And I've read Animal Liberation, too.

(sadistic) animal abuse is associated with all forms of anti social behavior, so we treat it as an extension of the the sadism it is acting out. Factory farming is cruel and far worse in scale, but it's cold and unfeeling, not motivated by malice or sadism. That's the difference

You've got a point. But we all know that the level of nasty you need to reach to throw some 3-day old puppies, makes you a non-grata person in every human society. Not at all comparable to a regular non-vegan person. Our moral intuitions doesn't rely merely on results.
