I think that’s because most people on the left view self-identifying patriots as insincere and untrustworthy. It is self promoting and more deceptive than honourable. I support the United States in all those circumstances where I believe it engages in ethical behaviour. When it does not, I do not. I do not believe in the concept “my country right or wrong”. Does that make me unpatriotic? I don’t know. Perhaps I misunderstand patriotism.

Perhaps this helps. John McCain was a person with whom I disagreed frequently, but respected as a genuine patriot. I consider John Kerry to be a patriot. Neither of them had to hug the flag to make that point to me. I prefer to leave it to others to define me.
