This may sound snarky, but I honestly don’t mean it that way — isn’t a cathedral a virtue signal almost by definition?
IIRC, a cathedral is primarily intended as an inspiring space for Catholic rituals, rites of passages, worship, music -- housing a local community of believers. Not imposing elite political ideologies on unwilling citizens.

That’s totally fair but it does feel to me like the real difference then (and it’s meaningful one!) is who is doing the signaling and with what instrument. What’s upsetting is the idea that *elites* would be using *someone else’s* symbol as a signal for their *own* idea of virtue
